Amarkantak is the origin of Narmada and Sone rivers.
Indian mythology comprises of several examples where rivers have been considered to be Gods.
In this case, legend has it that river Son was supposed to marry river Narmada. However, river Son got pally with one of the brides’s maids. Narmada stomped out of the wedding and started flowing towards west. The rejected Son, flew in the other direction towards east. Some consider Narmada – Son episode a reason for Narmada taking a vow for celibacy. Therefore, Narmada is considered as the holiest rivers in India.
