“You know the difference between news and gossip, don’t you? News tells you what people did. Gossip tells you how much they enjoyed it.” ― Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram
Is gossiping wrong ?
Can we avoid it ?
Of course, we can.
And we should.
Everyone knows that and yet we gossip!
Or is it impossible to avoid gossiping ?
Some argue that a gossip is nothing but a precursor to something that will be revealed soon. There is no smoke without fire !
Others contend that its actually a misrepresentation of actual facts and only makes things ugly for the people being gossiped about. Why not mind ones own business only!
One may suggest that gossips should always be ignored owing to their very nature of being counter productive towards anything they are about. But can a human actually ignore a gossip!
A renowned historian, philosopher and best-selling author, Prof. Yuval Noah Harari believes that gossip is actually a glue that binds a social group together. While discussing about how languages evolved and helped in the development of civilizations that we are part of today, he writes in his book Sapiens “Our language evolved as a way of gossiping.”
Social cooperation is our key for survival and reproduction. It is not enough for individual men and women to know the whereabouts of lions and bison. It’s much more important for them to know who in their band hates whom, who is sleeping with whom, who is honest, and who is a cheat.Sapiens, Prof. Yuval Noah Harari
